How to play the rhyme game
Find a new word that rhymes with the prompt before the next one arrives. Rhymebreak has two modes: one checks typed words, and one lets you practice speaking on a beat.
Play the rhyme game freeStart your first round
- Open Rhymebreak’s free play game and choose Type a rhyme or Say & tap.
- Choose Chill, Flow, or Fire. Leave rhyme hints on for your first session.
- Press Drop the beat. Listen or watch through the four-beat count-in.
- Answer the prompt, then move on when the word changes. There are eight prompts per session.
For “light,” you could use “night,” “bright,” or “flight.” Saying or typing “light” again is not a new rhyme. Words can look different and still rhyme: “blue,” “shoe,” and “through” share the ending sound.
Type a rhyme: words before the clock
Type a different word and press Enter or the arrow button. You have eight beats for each prompt. A word accepted by the starter rhyme list earns 100 points. Each prompt accepts one answer, for a maximum of 800 points across eight rounds.
A rejected answer does not end the round. You can try again while time remains. A successful answer locks until the next prompt, so repeated submissions cannot add extra points. Hints do not reduce the score; this is casual practice, not a verified competition.
Say & tap: speak on beat four
Think of a rhyme, say it aloud, and press the tap button on beat four. On a computer, you can also use the spacebar. The game measures the tap’s timing. It does not listen to your voice or check the word you said.
| Timing relative to beat four | Points |
|---|---|
| Within 140 milliseconds | 100 |
| More than 140, up to 320 milliseconds | 60 |
| Outside 320 milliseconds, within the accepted window | 20 |
| No accepted tap | 0 |
The tap window opens 450 milliseconds before beat four and closes when the next prompt arrives. Earlier taps are ignored so you can try again. You get one accepted tap per prompt. The result is a self-reported rhythm score, not proof that a spoken answer rhymed.
Choose a tempo you can keep up with
| Tempo | Type mode: 8 beats | Say & tap: 4 beats |
|---|---|---|
| Chill · 70 BPM | About 6.9 seconds | About 3.4 seconds |
| Flow · 90 BPM | About 5.3 seconds | About 2.7 seconds |
| Fire · 110 BPM | About 4.4 seconds | About 2.2 seconds |
Start slow. When you can finish a round comfortably, switch hints off before increasing the tempo. If you need a break, pause the session. Switching away from the game tab also pauses it; use Resume session to continue.
Why a valid rhyme might not count
Type mode uses a curated list of common English rhyme families. It is not a complete dictionary, and pronunciation varies between accents. Check that you used a different word, with no extra words or unusual punctuation. If it still does not count, try a displayed hint to finish the round.
Use the Feedback button on the game page to report the prompt and your rejected answer. A concrete pair, such as “prompt: blue; answer: …,” is more useful than a general error report. Do not include personal information.
Daily challenges and playing with friends
The daily rhyme challenge uses one shared eight-word mix in Type mode at 90 BPM. It resets at midnight UTC. Free play chooses a new mix when you start, while Retry this mix repeats your previous sequence.
After a session, Challenge a friend creates a link containing the mix, mode, and tempo. The recipient can play the same sequence. Agree on hints if you compare scores: hint use is optional and does not change scoring. There is no global leaderboard or cross-device account.
Sound and privacy
Beats are synthesized in your browser. If sound is muted or unavailable, follow the numbered beat display. The game never requests a microphone and does not save typed answers. Read our privacy policy for how optional play statistics and submitted feedback are handled.
